Raleigh ~ 21 lbs. of Pure Sweetness

I have so much to write about our littlest guy. (Sadly a lot of it involves his horrible accident last week with a steel door, but I will write about that in a separate post.) I feel guilty because when Tennyson was our only child I would literally post about his smallest accomplishments, but poor Raleigh just hasn't had the same attention to detail. Maybe I am not as good with my time as I used to be? Anyway, here's what B.R. has been up to lately.......

Raleigh is still a snuggle bug, and he still loves to be read to, especially before nap and bed time. Sometimes I can't get him to stop bringing me books. :) I hope he keeps up that love of the written word for a long time! His favorite books involve animals and he especially loves touch-and-feel books.

Watching Tom leave for work.

Despite his sweet, quiet nature Raleigh is starting to develop a mischievous side (perhaps the by-product of an older brother?). Most of it is typical sibling stuff, like taking a toy he knows Tennyson wants. He gets this look, this little side glance, sometimes to see if we are paying attention to what he's doing. But all in all we very rarely have to fuss at him. Occasionally his feisty side will come out, but that's usually when he's overly tired and doesn't get his way.

I am thankful Raleigh is usually a very cooperative child. I say it's time to eat - he climbs in his high chair. I tell him we're going bye-bye - he runs and gets his shoes. I tell him it's time to change his poopy diaper - he gets the mat and lays down on it! I'm not kidding! He does not like to be wet or stinky!

I like this photo (below) of Raleigh because I think it reflects that sweet nature of his. It's nice when he sits and plays by himself, though if I am being honest, that doesn't happen often enough around here. Independence hasn't been an early desire like it was for his older brother. Raleigh is much more sensitive, quiet, and cautious. (Though he does like climbing on the coffee table and jumping off so we can catch him.) He also is very wary of strangers and has been known to burst into tears if someone he doesn't know tries to pick him up or touch him.

It goes without saying that with 2 boys they are into many of the same things. One of these are the love of firetrucks. Raleigh was also really excited about sitting in the fire truck at Chick-fil-A (so long as Mommy or Daddy was the one to put him in the seat)! I love his expression as he "drives" the huge fire engine. And since Tennyson loves "Jake and the Never Land Pirates" our littlest boy has taken to making pirate sounds. If you ask him what a pirate says he flings his arm out and across his chest and says "Arrrgh!" It's hilarious!

I am always amazed at what big personalities little ones can have, and Raleigh is one of those kids. He really has a funny sense of humor and loves to laugh. He lights up whatever room he is in and sometimes I just can't take my eyes off him.

Raleigh is very busy and important.

Raleigh's vocabulary is growing at a steady pace. He says 15-20 words, including "ball," "cracker," "mine," "bus," "Tens" (Tennyson), "dat" (that), "fish," "bath," "pop," "bubble," "sock" "hide," and various animal noises (cow, dog, lion, elephant). An exciting moment happened a couple months ago when we were playing Candy Land with Tennyson and Raleigh picked up a purple card and said, "Purple." We didn't even know he knew any of his colors yet!

"Say what?"

Raleigh is such a wonderfully easy child. I told Tom I'd love 10 more just like and he said, "Great! Who'd be the father?" Such a very "Tom" response. The main thing I am trying to do now is wean Raleigh. I have loved nursing this time around, but I am ready for him to give up his nightly nursing before bed (and once in the night). Honestly, I may be a little sad when that bond has ended, but sometimes Raleigh needs that little push towards independence. It's good for him, though sad for a mommy sometimes.

Documenting October ~ Raleigh's Stay in the Hospital

Tom's mom, sister, and niece came to visit for a few days! My mother-in-law hadn't seen us for a year, so needless to say, it was good to see her and for her to see her youngest grandbabies! A highlight of their visit was going to Lohr's Pumpkin Patch so the boys could pick their own pumpkin.

Tennyson took Raleigh's hand all on his own as they walked across the field.

I love this one!

Getting the wagon.

Finally found the right one.

Tennyson was proud of his pumpkin.

The week Tom's family came to visit Tennyson and Raleigh caught a cold from the little boy I babysit. Within a week Tennyson's had turned in to croup and a week later so did Raleigh's. Tennyson responded well to the steroids and was healthy in a few days. However, Raleigh's croup went from bad to much, much worse. On Monday, October 25th, I took Raleigh in to the ER because he woke up in the middle of the night with that unforgettable, awful barking cough and he was definitely distressed. They gave him an oral steroid, but he only worsened during the next 24 hours.

First thing the next morning I took Raleigh in to the pediatrician's office (via my brother because on top of all this our car wasn't working). The doctor was obviously concerned. Raleigh had a high fever, he couldn't even breathe in without "barking," and his little tummy was going in and out (a bad sign to watch for). He tried giving Raleigh a breathing treatment, but in the 20 minutes or so we were in the office his condition worsened. So the doctor came back in and said something to the effect of, "We need to make sure it's not epiglottitis. He has to stay calm until we're sure, because his throat could close up. I've called the hospital. Do not stop at the front desk. Go straight up to the 4th floor and right to room 4164." Okay, then I really started to worry. I called Tom in tears and I am surprised I could even get out, "They are admitting Raleigh to the hospital. Can you leave school?" By the time I had called the pediatrician's office to the time we found ourselves at RMH it was only about 90 minutes.

When I got to the hospital and up to the room, the nurses swarmed on Raleigh. (They later told me that when they got the call that he was coming in they stopped everything because he was priority.) They tagged him with ID bracelets. The respiratory therapists gave him a breathing treatment. Then they wheeled he and I down to get an x-ray of Raleigh's throat so they could determine whether or not it was epiglottitis. The best way for him to stay calm was if he could stay on Mommy's lap, and he did really well! We were relieved to learn he just had a severe case of croup and not something way more serious.

It was unsettling to find out a few hours later that the emergency ENT box in his room was in case he got agitated and/or he couldn't breathe and they needed to do a tracheotomy. It was really a good thing I didn't know THAT was a possibility!

The IV was a nightmare. The nurses couldn't find a vein on his forearm so they turned his arm over and did it on the other side. I was crying. He was screaming. Not a pretty sight. Poor Raleigh had an IV (to give him more steroids), a heart monitor, an oxygen monitor, and a respiratory monitor. So needless to say his movement was very restricted. He was placed on "close observation" and whether or not we got to go home was largely dependent on how he did that night.

I had asked the first nurse for a bed instead of a crib because I knew there was NO way Raleigh was going to sleep in that. She said she couldn't do that and blabbered something about hospital rules. Tom is such a great Daddy and really wanted to stay that night, (My older sister stepped in and took Tennyson overnight.) but without a bed that was going to impossible. So I figured I would just sleep on the pull-out bed with Raleigh. The second nurse was awesome and I had barley mentioned how a bed would really be better before she had rolled out the crib cage and brought in a real bed! What a blessing!

So that day we just tried to keep Raleigh happy. He didn't eat much, so I was SO thankful for breastfeeding. All he wanted to do was nurse, so at least he was getting a little something. Our wonderful church sent a great balloon bouquet, and the principal of Tom's school came by to check on our little guy and brought a HUGE firetruck balloon! Sylvia M. from church came and prayed for him. And my parents came by and brought a singing, light-up dog. What a lifesaver! Raleigh loves that puppy! (And it's as close as he'll get to a real pet! Haha!) My sister and her then fiance (now husband) came and visited for a long time. Despite the circumstances it was nice to have a long visit with them without interruption. Raleigh loved having Aunt Courtney all to himself, too! We also had several friends call or text to say they were praying! It's times like that I am so grateful for the Body of Christ!

Doesn't he look so pathetic?!

This photo isn't the clearest and Raleigh's expression is so sad. :(

The puppy my parents brought him.

Notice how much stuff is on his arm. It was so heavy!

The neat balloons he got!

That night Raleigh slept in bed with me. I was able to keep his head elevated because of the automatic bed and that really helped his breathing. He only "barked" once during the night and none of his monitors went off! So the doctor came in early, early the next morning and checked him out and discharged us. (For some reason it took them another 4 hours and me asking to finally get us discharge papers. Ugh!)

Napping while we wait to be discharged.

Telling Daddy about the trucks below.

You can tell he feels much better!

He liked to sit in the windowsill and watch the cars and trucks in the lot.

So that was it! Our scary, harrowing croup experience. Raleigh actually got it again 10 days before Christmas, but thankfully it's was just a mild case. If your child ever gets croup don't wait, get him/her to the doctor ASAP! Raleigh's was unusually severe, but it's not something to mess around with on any level.

Next, documenting a VERY busy November!

We Still Call Him "B. R."

Yes, at less than 18 lbs., he's still our Baby Raleigh. He took his first official steps (4 of them to be exact) on August 12th. In a few short weeks he's mastered walking. Since he's so little it's just too cute to see him practically running all over the house. And just in the past couple weeks Raleigh loves bringing us books and climbing up on the couch to be read to. His favorite books are "The Very Busy Spider," "Dinosaurs Roar," and "The Very Quiet Cricket." He's also recently learned to point, stack blocks, climb on and off Tennyson's bed, and feed himself with a spoon and fork. And given the "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" or "Curious George" themes songs, and he will boogie with the best of them! It's adorable to see our little dude dance!

There are some things that haven't changed much. Raleigh still l-o-v-e-s to be held close and snuggled, something this mommy will never tire of. He brings unimaginable joy and laughter to our home. I could sit for hours and watch him play with cars or trains. He makes the cutest "boy noises," like the sound of cars driving all over the floor. Raleigh loves to give kisses, too, especially to his big brother. It warms my heart to see them loving on each other. I hope that continues as they grow.

In the Blink of an Eye

**I haven't been on my blog in for-ever.....and I JUST discovered this unpublished post from April 10th! It's over two months old, and Raleigh has changed SO much since then!**

All at once our little Raleigh baby has taken off. He started crawling on March 27th (8 months and 7 seven days old), which if you go by his due date he technically wasn't even seven months old yet. Haha! Last Sunday, April 4th, Raleigh said "Mama" for the first time. What a tender moment for a mommy's heart! And last night I put him in his crib so I could put the boys' laundry away and he pulled himself up to his feet for the first time! He was so proud of himself he just started giggling. Of course, I got all teary and just hugged him saying, "No, Mommy's not ready for you to do that yet!" But I really was so proud and excited! Raleigh is also trying to climb the stairs, now that I am really not ready for!

Raleigh continues to bring us such joy and well, not much rest. He's starting to sleep longer stretches at night, but really, I don't mind it. Someday I'll miss his sweet smell and his little body curled up next to mine at night. *sigh* Why can't I stop time....just for a moment.

Baby Boy is 6 Months Old!

Okay, Raleigh is actually 7 months by now, but hey, at least I am finally getting around to documenting his half-birthday, right? I have so much I could say about my Little BOL (One of my nicknames for him is Ball of Love). Raleigh rolled over at 4 months or so and now he is most definitely on the move. He's not crawling yet, but he has gotten his knees up under himself a few times. (Yikes!) He is one determined little man though. If he sees something he wants he WILL find a way to get it! Raleigh has been known to roll repeatedly across the living room just to get his sweet, little hands on one of big brother's trains! It's crazy how fast and precise his rolling has become! You can often hear us say, "How did you get all the way over there?"

Raleigh is still the happiest baby! Since birth he's just been this content, laid-back little dude. He's so alert and really notices new surroundings and people. It's so cute to watch him watch people. And just recently Tennyson and he have really starting interacting! Oh how I love it! Tennyson jumps around the room and then pretends to fall down and Raleigh just bursts into laughter. I tell you, sometimes I think I might explode from the cuteness!

At Raleigh's 6 month appointment he weighed 14 lbs. 5 oz. (5th percentile) and was 26.5 inches l
long (50th percentile). In fact the nurse measured him three times because she could not believe he had grown over 2 inches in 2 months. Looks like he'll be taking after Mommy in the height department, too! The peditrician explained that the growth charts don't really make alotments for preemies, but he was pleased to see that even though Raleigh is small he is gaining weight nicely.

This is especially good to know since he's still living solely off me. The few times we tried to give him a bottle he steadfastly refused. And I did make a couple attempts at rice cereal, but he was also less than enthusiastic about it. I figure there's no rules about when to introduce solids, so I am not going to stress about it. He'll eat it when he's ready.

Raleigh still loves to chew on his toes, especially when socks are present. And his determined little spirit is something I hope he doesn't lose. Here are some photos I took during a little photo shoot of my littlest man, and a few others since then.

His eyes really are that blue.
Loves the toes!

Baby feet

One of his many expressions
So content
Lookin' a little pouty.
"Do I have to try it, Mommy?"
"But my hand tastes better."
"Yeah, I'm not crazy about this organic rice stuff."

Black & White Photos ~ Raleigh

I took some photos a couple days before Raleigh turned 4 months old. These 2 are my favorites:

Raleigh Edward Davenport Bates ~ Baby Dedication

Since I am SO far behind in blogging I thought I'd just touch on the last few major events of 2009, and because there are several I'll do individual posts. In late October Tom's mom, sister, niece, and nephew came to visit. It was fun introducing them to Raleigh and them getting to know Tennyson better. I think they enjoyed it, too! Tom really wanted to do Raleigh's dedication while they were here, so on October 25th we had our second son dedicated to the Lord. We had a lot of my family there, but we were still missing quiet a few due to sickness or distance.

Our lead pastor, Merle, did the dedication and walked sweet, little Raleigh around the sanctuary while the slideshow played. We chose Rita Springer's song "Created to Worship," and I have included the words after the photos. Afterwards Tom read Psalm 133-134, just as he did every night to Raleigh in the womb. It was so meaningful to have him read that out loud at the dedication. Everything went well expect they cut the slide off just a minute or so in to it. I was so frustrated because my brother and I put A LOT of work into that! Since you didn't get to see the whole thing I will post that here on the blog.

Raleigh slept the whole time he was being shown off

I love this one of just our little family.

Thank you, Lord, for another precious son. We will raise Him up to know and follow you. What an amazing blessing Raleigh is to us and all who know him.

Created to Worship

I am your sacrifice
I am your offering
I was created to worship you
There’s nothing I could bring
That would mean more then this one thing
I was created to worship you.

You are all I have
All I have is you
You are all I am
All I am is you

Whatever you ask of me
There’s no one I'd rather be
Then one created to worship you
In all that comes my way
Poverty fame or pain
I was created to worship you

Without you there’s nothing Lord
Now and forevermore
I was created to worship you

Meeting Some Great-grandparents

Back in September my maternal grandfather and my step-grandmother came to visit. Since they live in Florida they hadn't met either one of our boys, so it was exciting for them to meet for the first time! Unfortunately we weren't able to get a photo with just them and Tennyson, but I did get some cute ones of them with Raleigh.

Friedel and Raleigh
My grandfather, Papa, and Raleigh

Friedel was absolutely taken with him and asked several times if he could go back to Florida with them. I think she was joking.

My parents with Papa waiting at the airport

My uncle coming in for a landing

Watching the planes

Tennyson loved watching the planes land and take off.

Our Littlest Man at (Almost) Three Months

Here are a couple photos I took on 10.18.09, two days before Raleigh was 3 months old. He's just so stinkin' precious. Enjoy!

This one is my favorite

His cheeks look so chubby in this photo. :-)

Oooo, I just wanna eat him up!
